A few answers on tuna fishing
"Special Report Reveals 7 Secrets You Need To Know For Tuna Fishing Success"
I want to know what
speed I should be trolling when tuna fishing...
It depends on which species of tuna you are targetting actually,
and sometimes the type of lure too. For example, if you are fishing for
southern bluefin tuna then
try trolling between 4-8 knots but increase your speed to 8-10 knots for
northern bluefin tuna and then a little faster at 8-12 knots for pacific
bluefin tuna.
Yellowfin tuna will
most often hit a lure when trolling at 6-9 knots of speed, which also
applies to albacore (longfin) tuna. Bigeye tuna can be a bit
trickier, so try trolling at low speeds of 4 knots and then all the way
up to 12 knots.
Blackfin tuna and longtail tuna don't grow to be quite as big as
the other types of tuna, so just pick a speed of arond 6-9 knots when
targetting them.
Please remember, these speeds are just a guide and you should
always test from the low range first and then increase after a while to
see if you see more results. Generally speaking, tuna love to hit a fast
bait so you will likely have more success when trolling your lures above
6 knots.
You will discover the exact trolling speeds and techniques
required for each type of tuna in my book.
My friends mentioned
that using a cedar plug is the best for tuna trolling...
I know one thing is true when it comes to tuna fishing lures, and that is
nothing works everytime. You eventually learn to read a situation and
know which lure will catch the tuna on that day in that
condition.
There are times when I've trolled a purple skirted lure with a
concave head with very few strikes, then I change to a green/yellow jet
head lure and had a strike in the first 20 minutes. But then I'll try
that same lure another time in the same area and catch nothing.
It's kind of like horses for courses, you have to adapt to the
conditions at the time but here are some general tips to get you
started.
1. When trolling for tuna, use a teaser in the middle of your
spread then a jet head lure behind the wash and a concave lure as your
close lure in the wash just off the stern of the boat. This way you will
attract maximum attention in the water and hopefully point the tuna
towards the lure making heavy vibrations in the wash (concave pushes out
compressions in the water). Tuna will often cruise straight past a lure
out the back and choose to strike anything that is in the wash.
2. Cedar plugs have been used with great results, especially by
old salty fisherman so don't count these lures out because of their
appearance. Try to troll 2 different sizes at least, as you're never
sure what size of tuna is lurking and if the lure is too big then the
fish can't swallow it. As always, keep your lure in the wash for the
best results.
3. Chrome slugs are the best option when you pull up along side
of a feeding school of tuna. Their size, shape and weight are ideal for
casting long distance which is what you need when trying to reach the
action from your boat as you pull up. Tuna will feed into the wind, so
steer your boat to be upwind when you cast your slug. Be sure to cast
the lure downwind and begin winding just before the slug hits the water
so there is less chance of your line being cut in the feeding frenzy.
Also, remember that the bigger tuna will patrol the outer perimter of
the bait ball so cast your slug to the outer circle and not into the
middle so you have better chances of hooking a whopper.
4. Vertical jigging when fishing for tuna is an almost guaranteed
method for catching tuna that dwell deep under the surface. The correct
methods for jigging are covered in my book along with examples of jig
lures that are known to catch tuna. Once you have found the tuna on your
fish finder, position your boat slightly up drift of the school then
send your jig down to the bottom. Don't allow it to sit on the bottom or
it will likely snag on something down below! There are different methods
of vertical jigging when tuna fishing, you can either hit the bottom
then bring it up a few winds so the hooks are clear of snags. Then with
a sharp action, jig the lure up and down until you feel a strike.
Another method of jigging for tuna is to let the lure down almost to the
bottom then retrieve to the surface as fast as you can. Often the jig
will have a strike on the way down and won't actually make it to the
bottom.
The only other tip I can give you is to try out as many lures and
methods as you can until you find what works in your area. Sometimes you
can see the tuna feeding, so you can cast lures into the action.
Sometimes the tuna are down deep so you need to entice them to the
surface or intrude their level of water with a jig.
You can read a great deal more on skirted jetheads, chrome
slugs, flyers, feathers, barrel heads, minnows, deep diving hard boy
lures, vertical jigs and much more in the lure section of my tuna
fishing book.
What advice can you
offer on bait selection for catching tuna?
Well bait is big subject when it comes to tuna fishing, a huge
subject actually. I've seen many different things work around the world,
so firstly I would say that tuna bait depends on what you have
available. If you can only access frozen or dead baits, then take squid
and pilchards/sardines with you. Tuna love squid in their natural
habitat so you can't go wrong with that bait. Just be sure to bait the
squid whole (not cut into strips or pieces) so that it looks natural in
the water.
If you know where to find live bait, then stop there on your way
out to sea to catch as many slimy mackeral as you can. These are
considered delicacies to a tuna and will greatly increase your catch
rate.
Catching small tuna and keeping them alive in a tank on the boat
is also a great bait to use as larger tuna can't resist smashing a
younger bonito or skipjack.
Yellowtails and nannygai are also used often for tuna fishing so
give them a try if you are able to collect some as live bait.
As I mentioned, talking about tuna fishing baits is a huge
subject which would take me all day to write about here. But it is
covered extensively in the bait section of tuna fishing book and I
explain each bait to use for every type of tuna.
I lost a tuna close to
the boat, what is a good knot to use next time?
The correct knot to use when tuna fishing depends on the type of
lure you are using along with the configuration of your tackle. There is
an actual 'tuna knot' and is basically an improved version of the
fishermans knot. The knot is strong and nearly retains 100% of the
line's breaking strain due to the double strands of line used to create
the knot. This is the best all round knot to use for tuna
fishing.
You will find examples and illustrations on the best knots
for tuna fishing in my book, they make it easy for you with step by step
instructions.
How do you pick the
right tackle for tuna fishing, which hooks work best?
There won't be much debate amongst fisherman when it comes to
tuna fishing tackle, as almost everyone uses tuna circle hooks.
Personally, I spend a little more to get the high carbon version of the
tuna circle hook because of the added strength it has. Tuna are like
raging bulls when they fight and can easily straighten a normal hook
that would be suited to other fish. The last thing that you want to do
after spending all this time and effort on catching tuna is to lose the
fish because of a cheap hook. You are spending good money on your hobby
so don't cut corners on the one thing that is holding that tuna on your
line.
